He befriends a boy who lives in hardship in the concentration camp. The "boy in the striped pyjamas" refers to the striped uniforms that are worn by all the camp inmates.
The book explores the developing relationship between the two boys against the background of Nazi suppression of the Jews held in the concentration camp.

∙ 12y agoThe Boy in the Striped Pajamas takes place first in Berlin, Germany but Bruno's father is then moved to Auschwitz which Bruno refers to as "Out With". The family is located right near the Auschwitz concentration camp. Auschwitz, being in Poland.
