So far, about 140 years! :) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) moved it's headquarters to Utah under the direction of Brigham Young in the 1840's. Brigham Young died in the 1870's. Today, the headquarters of the Church is still there, on the same block where Brigham Young said it should be. Two of his homes are on the block as well and are popular tourist attractions as historic museums, and also serve as a cafe and reception center.

Why did Brigham Young lead the Mormons to Utah?

Brigham Young became president of the Mormon church when Joseph Smith died. The Mormons needed a safe place to practice their religion. The Mormons had been kicked out of every other place they had tried to settle. At the time, Utah was a part of Mexico, and they wanted to escape the United States government. Also, before Joseph Smith died he told Brigham that the Saints would eventually have to move west to the Rocky Mountains. Because every where else that Mormons tried to settle were chased out and abused. So the Mormons went west to seek a place where they could practice their religion without being provoked.

Why did the Mormons settle near the Great Salt Lake?

Well, he didn't find Utah, it was already there and he knew how to get there. He didn't found Utah either - the area was called Territory of Deseret until after Brigham's death. Utah became a state in 1896, but Brigham Young died in 1877. Brigham Young moved to the area because the Mormons had been kicked out of their homes in Missouri and Illinois. Joseph Smith had previously said that they would find peace in the Rocky Mountains, so Brigham lead the people there.

Who led the Mormon church in Utah?
