Big Foot along with over three hundred men, women and children were rounded up by the soldiers as they were marching peacefully to Red cloud who had offered them sanctuary. On December 29, 1890, while they were encamped on the Wounded Knee River, the soldier came to take their weapons away. A deaf man, confused about what was happening, struggled and the gun went off. The soldiers opened fire and killed about 350 men, women and children.
