In the Revolutionary War battles both sides were armed and trying to take or hold positions. In the so-called Boston Massacre, on the British troops were armed. The crowd threatened them was not armed with more than snowballs, but the troops felt threatened and were backed into a corner.

Hundreds died and more were wounded on both sides during most battles of the Revolution. At the Boston Massacre only five of the mob were killed and no British troops were wounded
