As this question was in the World War Two folder, I will answer with-in the WW 2 time frame.

If a man enlisted ( volunteered his services to Canada ) he was agreeing to serve until the war was over, regardless of how long that took to accomplish.

In the case of some men who volunteered in September 1939, at the beginning of the war, and who survived their wartime service, they were overseas for more than six years, until their units returned to Canada, in late 1945 or 1946.

Only those who were very badly wounded, with limb amputations, or the loss of an eye, would be sent back to Canada by hospital ship. Many men were wounded a number of times, and went back into action again.

Service was for the duration of the war, or the man was killed, whichever came first. Tough stuff, eh?
