This count includes the wives of each president, as well as a few women who served in the role without being married to the president, such as Martha Washington and Dolley Madison. There have been 43 presidents, but 45 first ladies. (Grover Cleveland was a bachelor at first, and his sister Rose served as First Lady; but then he got married, and his wife Frances became First Lady. To further complicate things, President Cleveland was elected twice-- to two non-consecutive terms-- #22 and #24, so his wife Frances was counted two separate times). I enclose a link to a list of all the American First Ladies.
