* The USS Cumberland by ramming and not by shellfire. * The USS Congress which was grounded with hot shot after it had surrendered and its crew had been removed. * The USS Minnesota had run aground trying to evade the Virginia and was left for the next morning to finish off. That never happened because the USS Monitor arrived during the night prepared to do battle. On 9 March 1862 both the Monitor and the Virginia believed they had won the battle of the ironclads. Neither fought again and the Confederate Navy remained bottled up in Norfolk for the duration. Only the Cumberland was sunk in combat with the Virginia.
