Estimates are very rough and paper trails are hard to find. St Lo was the second most costly battle next to the battle of Stalingrad in the European theater of war. However, experts put the number of allied casualties at 40,000 with at least 27,000 of those being Kia. However the German loss was much worse. The German 352nd army, which included the 2nd SS Panzer-grenadier division, known as one of the two most elite groups of soldiers in the second world war, was completely annihilated, with estimates as many as 60,000 casualties.
