This ancient seabed harbored only some of the earliest and most primitive forms of sea life, stromatolites, and the oldest rocks in the park may be up to 1.5 billion years old. Other layers of rock in the park include siltstones and limestones. Much later, around the time of the dinosaurs, the mountains were thrust up as North America slid westward across the Pacific tectonic plate; a huge slab of rock called the Lewis Overthrust was shoved upward and eastward. Since then, the rock has eroded down, most dramatically during the Pleistocene Ice Age, when glaciers carved up the mountains and valleys.
