The first one we have a record of was a Spanish expedition of five ships and a crew of about 270 led by Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who was silly enough to meddle in local politics in the Philippines and was killed.
Four of the ships were lost, and one the Vittoriamade it back to Spain. Its master Juan El Cano and 17 crewmen of the original 43-man crew of the ship survived to return.

One of his ships broke down but he kept going
Ferdinand Magellan's expedition took just under three years to complete its journey around the world. The voyage began on September 20, 1519, and concluded on September 6, 1522, when one of the remaining ships, the Victoria, returned to Spain. Although Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his crew continued the journey, ultimately completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
The queen of Spain gave him the money to get to the Americas.
