The Ute or Utah tribe was made up of numerous hunting bands who never came together as a whole tribe. There were also sub-groups such as the Gosiute who are sometimes regarded as a different tribe and sometimes included with the Ute.

If you include the Gosiutes but exclude the various bands of Paiutes ("Water Utes"), there were approximately 4,500 people in the Ute bands at the time they were first contacted by White explorers
