James Monroe - American Revolution

Andrew Jackson - American Revolution, War of 1812, First Seminole War

William Henry Harrison - Indian wars in the NW territory, War of 1812

Zachary Taylor - War of 1812, Black Hawk, Second Seminole, and Mexican wars

Franklin Pierce - Mexican War

James Buchanan - War of 1812

Abraham Lincoln - Black Hawk War

Andrew Johnson - Civil War

Ulysses Grant - Mexican War, and Civil War

Rutherford Hayes - Civil War. First a Major in 23 Ohio Regiment and promoted up to Brigadier General in October 1864. (see Wm McKinley, below)

James Garfield - Civil War. Commanded the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later a brigade.

Chester A. Arthur - Civil War. Served as acting quartermaster general of the New York state in 1861. He was later commissioned as inspector general, and appointed quartermaster general with the rank of brigadier general and served until 1862.

Benjamin Harrison - Civil War. Colonel of the 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Commanded a Brigade through the battles around Atlanta.

William McKinley - Civil War. Served in 23 Ohio Regiment under another future U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes promoted McKinley to commissary sergeant for his bravery in battle. For driving a mule team delivering rations under enemy fire at Antietam, Hayes promoted him to Second Lieutenant.

Theodore Roosevelt - Spanish-American War. Led the "Rough Rider" volunteer cavalry in his famous charge.

Harry Truman - WWI

Dwight Eisenhower - WWII. Commander of Allied Supreme Headquarters

John Kennedy - WWII. Commanded a navy PT boat, which was rammed by a Japanese ship. Stranded on a deserted island with crew.

Lyndon Johnson - WWII. Already a politian, he was sent to the Pacific with no specific assignment. He flew as an observer on a bombing mission that was attacked by Japanese fighter aircraft. He was awarded a Silver Star for what? Observing?

George H. Bush - WWII Former Lieutenant in the Navy. He flew a Navy torpedo Avenger bomber and was shot down. Earned a Distinguishing Service Cross.
