Columbus made four voyages to the area of the West Indies. The first (1492) to Hispaniola, Cuba, and the Bahamas. The second (1493) to these islands, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Antilles. The third (1498) to the northern coast of South America, before returning to Hispaniola. Columbus was accused of criminal cruelty and he and his brothers were jailed in Spain in late 1500, but they were ultimately exonerated. His fourth voyage (1502-1504) weathered two hurricanes but explored the Central American coast of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The expedition's ships were wrecked and they spent a year stranded on the island of Jamaica.
