The country was called 'The Union of SA' in 1910 by the British, after they combined 4 smaller 'colonies' and republics, which then became the four provinces of South Africa. It then became 'The Republic of South Africa' on 31st May 1961 after a referendum asking the people if they wanted to be free of Britain, the answer was yes! So..... you can say the country has been called South Africa for 97 years!
