England does not have another name.England is one of three countries (the other two being Wales and Scotland) that make up the island called Great Britain. Great Britain and part of the north of the island of Ireland, known as Northern Ireland, make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Incidentally, Great Britain is not called 'Great' because it is a powerful or wonderful country (even though it IS a wonderful country!). It was originally called 'Great' Britain to differentiate it from simply 'Britain' on the north coast of France when that area was owned by the British. Nowadays that area is still called 'Bretagne' by the French - or, in English, 'Britanny'. Here, as well as speaking French, they also speak Breton, an ancient language similar to Cornish or Welsh as spoken in Great Britain (in Cornwall and Wales).Americans often call Great Britain or the United Kingdom 'England' but this is incorrect and a bit of an insult to the Welsh and Scottish. The 'British Isles' consist of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the independent Republic of Ireland and many other islands in the area including the Channel Islands and Man.
Wales has the smallest population and land area in Britain.
Pytheas, a Greek living in Massalia (Marseilles) in the late 4th century B.C., wrote a book called "Peri Tou Okeanou" or "About the Ocean", in which he tells of his voyages in the Atlantic and circumnavigating Britain. Unfortunately, the book itself is lost, but it is quoted directly. that is when the land of Britain was discovered. Britain is (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, & Wales) the united kingdoms of England and Scotland was in 1603 and in 1707 Wales and Ireland joined then Britain was formed as a united group of countries in. Southern Ireland in separated from Britain in 1921. but still remain part of the united kingdom.
This comes from the land of the britons ( a tribe present in the country 2000 years ago). The Romans on their invasion called the island 'Britannia' as a result (hence the song - Rule Britannia!) after this tribe. The name Britain became a shortened version of the 'Britannia' name. The 'great' in Great Britain was added to differentiate between the large island of Britannia and a smaller area in north west France, also occupied by britons. Therefore, this area became 'Lesser' Britannia (not 'Little Britain' - as in the TV show!) and became eventually known by the French as 'Bretagne', or as we in the UK call it today, Brittany. If I may interject, a number of sources state that Britain or Briton was called Albion before that but was changed after Brutus of Troy invaded and conquered these isles. His comrade Cornieus became king over what is now Cornwall.
In 1801, the parliaments of Britain and Ireland merged and their title became 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland'.
These three nations are all located on the island of Great Britain. There is a land boundary between England and Scotland. There is also a land boundary between England and Wales. However, there is no land boundary between Scotland and Wales. Together with Northern Ireland, the full title of the country is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. Often shortened to UK , United Kingdom , GB , Great Britain, Britain, and erroneously England.
Scotland is at the northern end of the island of Great Britain, which is part of Europe. Great Britain is included within Europe because it sits on the European continental shelf and until the last ice age it was connected to the mainland of Europe by a land bridge.
Great Britain is an island consisting of three countries: England, Scotland, and Wales. It shares borders with Ireland (Northern Ireland to the north and the Republic of Ireland to the west), but it does not have any land borders with other countries.
Britain, consisting of England, Wales and Scotland. There is also the island called the Isle of Man which is between Britain and Ireland.
Northern Ireland has never been part of Great Britain. Great Britain is an island consisting of Wales, England and Scotland. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland which is a completely separate island. Northern Ireland, along with England, Scotland and Wales, are together known as the United Kingdom, which is probably what you are referring to. So Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but not part of Great Britain.
The combination of all three makes Great Britain.
Great Britain is an island, therefore no country has a land border with it. If you mean the United Kingdom, then the province of Northern Ireland has a land border with the Republic of Ireland.
Because it is a different Country. Wales is it's own Country just like England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They are all part of the United Kingdom or Great Britain though. Seperate Countries that come together !
Scotland is north of England on the Island of Great Britain.
Land's End
No British country is shared with another land. Britain is the island containing England, Scotland and Wales. You may be referring to Northern Ireland, which is on the island of Ireland, along with the Republic of Ireland. However, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but not part of Britain. The United Kingdom's description even makes that distinction. It is the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."
Scotland occupies the northern part of the Island of Great Britain and has a common border with England.Scotland is in Great Britain it shares a border with England and is part of Europe. There are also Ireland and Wales in Great Britain, But Scotland is the Best, yeh, ROCK ON SCOTLAND,Yeh!!!!!!!!!
