Bhutan was unified as a single kingdom in the 17th century. Since that time the official name of Bhutan has been Drukyul (country of the Drokpa, the Dragon People, or the Land of the Thunder Dragon, a reference to the country's dominant Buddhist sect) and Bhutan only appears in English-language official correspondence
English map names used for the kingdom have included Cambirasi, Potente, Mon (Lho Mon) and Broukpa.
