The old name for the Caribbean coast is Antilles. The Caribbean Sea was known as the Sea of the Antilles and is still referred to as such in many different European languages.
Columbus first visited the Bahamas, landing in a place he named San Salvador. He later sailed to Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles, two other islands in the Caribbean.
The West Indies were inhabited by indigenous peoples when Christopher Columbus arrived. These included the Taino in the Bahamas and Cuba, the Caribs in the Lesser Antilles, and the Arawak in the Greater Antilles.
The Kalinago and Taino peoples lived in the Caribbean region, primarily on islands such as Dominica and Puerto Rico, respectively. The Taino inhabited a larger area, including parts of the Greater Antilles, while the Kalinago, also known as Caribs, were primarily found in the Lesser Antilles. Both indigenous groups were present in various Caribbean islands before European colonization.
The Arawaks primarily inhabited the Greater Antilles, which includes islands such as Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Cuba. They also settled in the Bahamas and parts of the Lesser Antilles. The Arawaks were among the first indigenous peoples encountered by European explorers in the Caribbean. Their societies were known for agriculture, fishing, and trade.

The Antilles got their name from the Spanish term "Antillas," which was used by early Spanish explorers in the 15th century. The term is believed to derive from "Antillia," a mythical island mentioned in medieval maps and literature. The name was later applied to the islands in the Caribbean, which were collectively referred to as the Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles based on their size and geographic location.
