John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) was the fourth child of Patrick Calhoun and his wife Martha Caldwell Calhoun. Patrick was an Ulster-Scot who emigrated from County Donegal. John C. Calhoun was born in the United states and became a leading southern politician and advocate of slavery, states' rights, limited government, and nullification. He represented South Carolina in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and served as Secretary of State, Secretary of War, and as Vice Presidento fhte United States. He was a brother-in-law of George Armstrong Custer. James Calhoun (1743-1816) served as Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, from 1794-1804.
