Pevensey Castle was involved in three military actions during the High Middle Ages. It was put under siege in the Rebellion of 1088 by King William II, it was used by forces of King Steven during his war with Queen Matilda in the period of 1135 to 1141, and it was besieged by Simon de Montfort when forces of King Henry III took refuge in it after the Battle of Lewes, in 1264.
