Slave labor was a benefit to most Romans. If one had a servant or slave, it freed up the person's time to get other things done. Remember, in the ancient world there was very little automation and no modern time saving appliances. Just about everything was done by hand, and the more hands there were at a job, the quicker it got done. The ancients were a dawn to dusk society and most of the meaningful work had to be done during daylight. The negative side for the master was not only the expense of having a slave, but having to put up with him/her. Slaves were people and they had all the shortcomings of people in general. Some were fast, some slow, some quick to learn, some simply stupid. Even Augustus had to put up with the shortcomings of his nomenclator, who was a slave whose duty was to tell the master the names of the people he met or was meeting.
