It's not known who was responsible for starting the Mafia, it's likely to have started as a collaborative effort between various criminals to solidify their power and wealth. It began in Sicily, and traveled to America along with the Italian immigrants. Initially, the American Mafia began by extorting money from Italian American merchants to be used as ' protection.' However, prohibition was the great catalyst which skyrocketed the American Mafia to prominence and power.
He was Jewish. He would never qualify to be a member of the mafia which accepted full blooded Italians only.........at least at that time in history. Old school mafia, (which were in power at that time) were sticklers for observing the rules of omerta. If he was involved with them at all, he would have been considered an "associate".

Of course not. You can never make a stereotype as such. There is, indeed, an Italian mafia. But certainly, not all Italians are involved with it.

AL CAPONE. Gangster who was involved in prohibition.
most of the businesses of mafias are bootlegging, prostitution, illegal gambling and smuggling.
Lucky Luciano was primarily involved in organized crime, particularly in the development of the American Mafia. He didn't own traditional businesses in the conventional sense but was instrumental in running illegal operations such as bootlegging during Prohibition, gambling, and narcotics trafficking. He also had interests in legitimate businesses as fronts for his criminal activities, including nightclubs and restaurants. Luciano's innovative approach helped establish the modern Mafia structure in the United States.
It is doubtful that so-called Italian Mafia is involved as a major player. However, if by "mafia" you mean a culturally/ethnically/racially defined group controls criminal activity in the Hawaiin Island. . . yes, that is undoubtedly a true statement.
