The main focus of Roman religion in general was the observance of rituals and the consultation of the gods. Roman religion did not have a theology. It had a number of gods who had different roles and a large number of religious festivals with rites associated with a particular god and with propitiation, purification, fertility, honouring the sowing, the harvest, the family and ancestors, the neighbourhood and the like. These festivals and their rites had an important role in regulating public life.
Originally state religion consisted of public religious festivals and augury. Private festivals were family affairs. Public festivals were overseen by the priesthoods which represented state religion. The regulation of the calendar, which listed the dates of both public and private festivals, was in the hands of the head of state religion (the Pontifex Maximus).
Augury was a form of divination consisting of the reading of the signs of the gods to see if a god agreed with an intended action or to see if the omens were good or bad. Augury had to precede most political procedures and military actions. It was performed by the priesthood of the Augurs and was also invested to the higher officers of state during the Republic, which gave religious weight to their public office.
Another layer was added later by the emperors. Divinities associated with the emperor and cults related to the emperor were introduced.
Rome got their religion from Greece, they just changed the names of some of the gods. Later, Christianity was introduced into Rome.
The pre-Christian Roman religion, although a personal one in one sense, was also a state religion. The prosperity and good of the empire depended on the worshiping and sacrificing and respecting of the state gods. If they were not honored, they would take their protection from Rome The Christians refused to honor the state deities and therefore, in the minds of many Romans, helped to bring about the misfortunes of the empire culminating in the fall of the western part. Remember, too, that this was only one contribution to the fall of Rome. There were many other factors acting together that helped end western Rome.
Constantine, is erroneously known as a Roman emperor who made Christianity the state religion and even converted to it. In reality he made Christianity a legal religion along with all the others and there is no proof except the word of a religious fanatic that he ever converted to Christianity.
From the time of Caesar Augustus (during the lifetime of Jesus), the religion of the Roman Empire consisted of emperor worship and the worship of a pantheon of Gods headed by Jupiter and Hera (the homologues of the earlier Greek version, Zeus and Hera). After 325 A.D., when Constantine was the Roman emperor, the state religion was Christianity. And Christianity has predominated in Europe ever since (along with being the majority religion in North and South America, as well as Australia.
