Both working class and middle class had to work hard for a living wage. However, the working class had less rights and often worked extremely long hours without any provisions for poor health, for work breaks, for vacation time, for any sort of insurance. For a time, even children were forced to work very long hours. There were no labor unions and the government did very little in the early decades to regulate the workplace. The middle class may have fared somewhat better but the boss made the rules and everyone pretty much had to kowtow to them.
