The Confederacy led in the experimentation with submarines. The most successful was the HL Hunley. The inventor was killed in a test dive with his new and imaginative war vessel. The Confederate submarine sank the Federal warshipthe USS Housatonic in the Charleston harbor. The submarine, however, was dragged down by the sinking Housatonic. The Confederacy decided to end experimentation with submarines after that. The Union had no submarines.

The H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine, sank the USS Housatonic on February 17, 1864, by using a spar torpedo. The attack resulted in the sinking of the Housatonic, leading to the deaths of five crew members. The Hunley itself was lost shortly after the attack, with all eight of its crew perishing, making it the first combat submarine to sink an enemy warship, but at a tragic cost.
