The H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine, sank the USS Housatonic on February 17, 1864, by using a spar torpedo. The attack resulted in the sinking of the Housatonic, leading to the deaths of five crew members. The Hunley itself was lost shortly after the attack, with all eight of its crew perishing, making it the first combat submarine to sink an enemy warship, but at a tragic cost.
