In 1991, during the Gulf War, the U.S. warships that were damaged by Iraqi mines were the USS Tripoli (LPH-10) and the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58). The USS Tripoli sustained damage when it struck a mine while operating in the Persian Gulf, while the USS Samuel B. Roberts was also severely damaged by a mine explosion, which resulted in significant casualties and prompted changes in mine countermeasures for the U.S. Navy.
After Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1991, the US developed a plan to force the Iraqi armies out of this small oil producing country. The Operation Desert Storm was a US led coalition that used US airpower, then ground troops to end the Iraqi occupation. The Iraqi's set many oil wells on fire as they retreated and some of these fires lasted for weeks and weeks. Casualties in this operation were not large and the war ended rather quickly.

It was an airstrike against Saddam Husseins air defence command and control by the US Army using Apache helicopters who were lead to the target by US Airforce Special Operations helicopters. This knocked out the Iraqi air defence radar opening the way for a massive aerial bombardment.

The Iran-Iraq War lasted approximately ten years ending in about 1989. One of our US warships was struck by a missile and nearly sunk, in the Persian Gulf. Sometime later, one of our US warships shot down an Iran/Iraq civilian airliner that appeared to pose a threat on the warships radar. In January 1991, Operation Desert Storm commenced. In February 1991 it ended. The Iraqi's had pulled out of Kuwate. Mission accomplished. In 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom commenced. The operation's title probably still applies (officially), if so...operation on-going.
