John Cabot's ship was a caravel. It was named, "The Matthew" after his wife, Matthea. The Matthew was used in the voyage of 1497. It was able to carry 50 tons of wine or other cargo. It was decked, with a high sterncastle and three masts. The two forward masts carried square mainsails to propel the vessel forward. The rear mast was rigged with a lateen sail running in the same direction as the keel, which helped the vessel sail into the wind. Its length was 78 ft (24 m) with its beam of 20 ft 6 in (6.2 m). The purpose of this caravel was to go into small rivers and lakes, unlike other ships, it was small. John Cabot believed that he could sail straight through Canada because he never knew it existed. But, when he reached Newfoundland, he decided to head bck to England because he had been on the journey for a long time and he was tired. After he came back, he was sent back to find Japan, but with more ships. But, John Cabot was believed to be never seen agin. He probably was lost in the sea with his crew and ran out of supplies.

Likely a slave on a Viking ship, and likely on one of their many trips to Baffin Island. First recorded is thought to be, and the award goes to, William Weston a Bristol Merchant on John Cabots ship the Matthew. The award was real, it was given by King Henry the seventh in 1498.
