The Zimmerman Message was a coded message that was intercepted and decoded by British Intellegence. On January 16, 1917 Author Zimmerman sent a message to the German Ambassador in Washington. The message proposed that Germany and Mexico form an alliance if US entered the first world war. It stated that Germany was going to begin unrestircted submarine warfare on February 1, 1917. They wanted to keep US neutral but if it didn't succeed, they wanted an alliance with Mexico so that if US entered the war against Germany they would have the Mexicans to their south to face as well. The incentive for Mexico was that they would reclaim territory in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. Mexico declined the offer.
