based on a a huge stone stele discovered by workmen in or around 1625, Martin Palmer (The Jesus Sutras: Rediscovering the Lost Religion of Taoist Christianity) says that Christianity came to China in 635. A formal delegation led by Aluoben, arrived at the ancient Chinese capital, Chang'an, now Xi'an, in that year.
The name Aluoben is Persian, and much of what is known about the new religion seems strangely non-Christian. For example, Palmer needs to speculate as to how the delegation became influenced by Jainists before their arrival in Chang'an, in order to attempt to explain their insistence on strict vegetarianism. However, the Gnostic Christians were already strict vegetarians, as were the Manichees of Persia. Unfortunately for the evangelically-minded, it seems likely that Aluoben actually brought Manichaeanism, a mixture of Gnostic Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Buddhism that flourished in Persia at that time.
So, the year 635 is a possible date for the arrival of Christianity in China, but not entirely certain.

Only North Korea has banned Christianity.During much of the twentieth century, nations of the Soviet bloc strongly discouraged Christianity, but these restrictions have been lifted. Some say that China discourages Christianity, but there is no overt sense of this in travelling around the country and visiting churches on Sundays. The Chinese government does refuse to accept the authority of foreign authorities to nominate leading clergy within China, but this is probably influenced more by experience with foreign domination and the humiliation of China by foreign powers during the nineteenth century. The Chinese government does implicitly discourage Christianity (and to a lesser extent, other religions) by making development approvals for the construction of new churches and temples exceedingly hard to obtain.

Christianity
Christianity is said to have been founded in the first century CE. I grew slowly throughout the Roman Empire until, at the beginning of the 4th century, it probably consisted about ten percent of the population. At this point, Emperor Constantine gave the proto-Catholic-Orthodox branch of Christianity state patronage. This patronage made Christianity socially and politically desirable for some, and the religion grew quite rapidly. In the decade of the 380s, Christianity was made the state religion, and in 391 CE pagan worship was banned. So, Christianity became a leading religion in the fourth century CE.
