Generally speaking, the Winter weather in the New England section of the United States is very harsh compared to the Middle Atlantic states ( former colonies ). The northern location of New England in relation to the Middle Atlantic area brings much more snow and cold weather then states ( colonies ) to the south of it. While its true that parts of New York state receive harsh Winter weather, for the most part the southern area of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland have less frigid and stormy Winter weather.
