Contrary to popular belief, the expedition DID NOT begin in St. Louis, Missouri. The journey began in St. Charles, Missouri. Lewis, who had been assigned by Jefferson sailed down the Ohio River with supplies towards St. Charles. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). They then named their team the "Corps of Discovery." ("Corps" is pronounced "CORE", not "CORPSE"). From there, they sailed down the Ohio River towards St. Charles. Meriwether Lewis had spent the time prior to their departure in St. Charles gathering information from mountain men returning from the west. They then departed St. Charles in May 1804 heading up the Missouri River.
They encountered with the Missouris, the Omahas, the Yankton Sioux, and the Teton Sioux (Lakota) in the first season of exploring.
During the Lewis and Clark expedition, the group encountered a challenging section of the Missouri River known as the Great Falls in 1805. Here, they faced a series of five waterfalls that necessitated a difficult portage of about 18 miles. The crew had to transport their boats and supplies overland, which took several weeks and tested their endurance. This experience highlighted the ruggedness of the terrain and the logistical challenges of their journey. Five facts about the Great Falls portage: The Great Falls consist of five distinct waterfalls, totaling a drop of 86 feet. The portage required the crew to carry all their gear, including canoes, supplies, and equipment. The expedition spent approximately 31 days navigating the portage. The challenges faced at Great Falls prompted innovations in their transport methods, including the construction of a cart for easier movement. The Great Falls area was significant for its natural beauty and marked a key point in the westward exploration of the United States.

Meriwether Lewis discovered the Great Falls of the Missouri River in present-day Montana on June 13, 1805 during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He noted the five imposing waterfalls and the challenging rapids they presented for navigation.
The major landforms encountered during the Lewis and Clark expedition include the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, Columbia River, Missouri River, and the Louisiana Purchase territory. These diverse landscapes presented both challenges and opportunities for the expedition as they navigated their way westward to the Pacific Ocean.

They also discovered important geological features like the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains. Additionally, they encountered various indigenous tribes such as the Osage and Mandan people.
On August 3, 1805, a Saturday, Lewis recorded this in the journals:"This morning they passed a small creek on the starboard at the entrance of which Reuben Fields killed a large panther [mountain lion].
