1535
The first known European explorer to sail the inland part of the St. Lawrence was Jacques Cartier during his second trip to Canada in 1535.
He died in the year 1557 (when he was 66), and he was born in the year 1491.
In 1524, Verrazano explored the Eastern coastline of North America from what is now North Carolina to Newfoundland. Eleven years later in 1535, he set sail for the New World with Jacques Cartier.
The French came to colonize North America in the 1500s and throughout the centuries that followed, just like the British. In fact, much of what is today Canada was once New France. The first French voyage to Canada with an eye to colonization was in 1534, led by Jacques Cartier.
