It was very relevant to the early history of Russia / Ukraine in medieval times because they were the main pre-mongol Nomadic threat to the Rus Principalities. Though the relationship between the Rus and the Kipchak / Cuman wasn't one of strict competition, there were plenty of intermarriage and both participated in each other's intrigue (like aiding one side in succession struggles etc.) Also the Kipchaks Khanate's inhabitants were most likely the main population of the Golden Horde as well.
The Russian principalities were primarily located in the Khanate of the Golden Horde. This khanate was established in the 13th century and encompassed a vast territory that included parts of modern-day Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. The Golden Horde played a significant role in the political and cultural development of the Russian principalities during the Mongol Empire's dominance in the region.
