It was very relevant to the early history of Russia / Ukraine in medieval times because they were the main pre-mongol Nomadic threat to the Rus Principalities.
Though the relationship between the Rus and the Kipchak / Cuman wasn't one of strict competition, there were plenty of intermarriage and both participated in each other's intrigue (like aiding one side in succession struggles etc.)
Also the Kipchaks Khanate's inhabitants were most likely the main population of the Golden Horde as well.
