From a purely military view, the answer must be a strong yes, it did bring the war to an accelerated end. The moral and ethical position will be debated for a long time, and the pros and cons will never satisfy everyone.
People should care about the atomic bomb attack because that is how WWII ended. It's a big deal considering that America was once allies with Japan and now they turn on the American citizens, so America decided to turn back on them and drop the Atom Bomb, or "Atomic Bomb".

My opinion is, Truman should have used the atomic bomb. If he hadn't the war would have continued, and more would have died. Also I think that at one point the Axis would have dropped a atomic bomb on an allied city, possibly killing more then at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
