The rise of French Rococo painting in the early 18th century can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the decline of the Baroque style and its grandeur allowed for a shift towards lighter, more playful themes that characterized Rococo art. Secondly, the increasing influence of the French court, particularly under Louis XV, fostered a culture of leisure and intimacy, reflected in the romantic and decorative subjects of Rococo paintings. Lastly, the rise of a wealthy bourgeois class also played a role, as they sought art that resonated with their tastes for elegance and charm, further popularizing the Rococo style.

Rococo.
Rococo is an 18th century art period which features feminine and ornate decorations. Rococo art uses many pastel colors, patterns, and outdoor scenes. The word is a fusion of two words, one French and the other Italian. The French comes from the word rocaille, which refers to art almost like a mosaic of found objects for a garden. It is also Italian because it shares an origin with the word Baroque, which defines a prior art period which was much darker, but shared the attention to details and emphasis on patterns.

Antoine Watteau demonstrated characteristics of rococo art in his paintings by incorporating curving lines and decorative nature. He painted with the ornate elegance attributed to the rococo art seen in architecture, furniture, and sculpture.
