Yes on both counts. For a simple answer, Alexander Hamilton was our first Secretary of the Treasury, and he was the one that set up the structure and function of that portion of our government such as the cabinet and the Mint, which are still both essential in government. As for Thomas Jefferson, he wrote the Declaration of Independence which is of huge importance today, but he also established the Survey of the Coast, which eventually led to the formation of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
