No, Vietnam is a sovereign nation. From 111 BCE until 39 AD, China ruled Vietnam. Four years later, China reconquered Vietnam and ruled for another 5 centuries before being driven out. Then from 602-905 AD China ruled Vietnam again. Then there was the short lived "Fourth Chinese domination" that lasted for 20 years in the 15th century. China invaded Vietnam for about 4 weeks in 1979, but pulled out with no clear winner (The Vietcong managed to hold onto Cambodia while China successfully destroyed Vietnam's offensive capabilities in the North).

How could ancient China destroy barriers?But in a way it is sort of "taking over".In 1980s China declared war on Vietnam,and defeated Vietnam but didn't take over it. No. I'm a Vietnamese and I know we were not a tribute country. Go to Wikipedia and search for China History. The territory of the map is including Vietnam in the ancient time for almost 1000 years. But we still call it a millennium year Chinese occupation . After we got our independent, then we became a tribute country because we didn't want to have any wars with the Han while we fought the Cham people in the south. But sometimes in the history, they're still wars because China thought Vietnam was a part of it and kept sending army to invade Vietnam for whatever reason they made.

And at that time, we didn't call them China or Chinese, we called it by dynasty name. Like Han dynasty, Qin dynasty, Wu dynasty. And so we called the people Han people, Qin people, Wu people. We didn't call them Chinese.

In 1979, No sides won the war. China suffered heavy loss in people, and Vietnam main army was in the south. All the villages which China occupied only had the local army soldiers/ polices/retired soldiers. All the machines were destroyed, all the house and farms were burned. Animals such as pigs, cows, chickens, etc were killed. It was a hard time for Vietnamese villages to rebuild their town after Chinese soldier left.

North Vietnam received tanks and MiG17 & MiG19 jets (J5 & J6 versions) as well as tons of AK47s, grenades, artillery, etc. from Red China. The Soviet Union primarily provided SAMs and MiG21s. Both Communist China/USSR trained North Viet pilots in Red China and Russia (USSR).

There were TWO China's during the cold war: Red China and Nationalist China (Taiwan). One China was allied to Russia (Soviet Union) and one China was allied to America.
