That's probably why the current Viet government restricts tourist travel in the back-country; protection from old ordnance. Just stay where the current government has their tourist routes...and everything should be good.
Remember; WWII bombs were dropped all over the world during the war...about 2 1/2 million tons worth. Nearly three times that number of bombs were dropped in Vietnam alone (counting Cambodia/Laos). That's a very heavy concentration of ordnance!
