William sherman
William sherman
Union General William T. Sherman played an important role in the US Civil War. His efforts helped in a large way to defeat the Confederacy. His early life is ofter overlooked. Here are some interesting parts of his background before the US Civil War:* Sherman was raised as a ward of a prominent lawyer and politician, Thomas Ewing;* Sherman's widowed mother was unable to properly raise her eleven children so the Roman Catholic Ewing family agreed to raise Sherman;* Sherman's original name was only Tecumseh, for the Native American chief. People referred to Sherman as Cump;* Sherman acquired his Christian name when Ewing's priest baptized him on St. Williams Day;* As a youth, Sherman hated his natural red hair and tried to use a dye to change the color;* Sadly, this turned his hair to a strange looking green color; and* He graduated from West Point and was known there as a prankster and drinker.
He led the Union Army of Tennessee across Georgia, crippling the Confederate supply lines. He also had a tank named after him and is still hated in Georgia and South Carolina.
This is a difficult question because the military service rendered by William Tecumseh Sherman was at the time and still is controversial at every phase of his career. He served in the Seminole War. He served in California at the time of the Bear Republic and the Mexican War. He was the commanding general in Texas along with General Sheridan fighting Plains Native Americans following the Civil War. Sherman's most famous command was his Civil War "March to the Sea" through Georgia to Savannah. Foraging soldiers from his army without discipline were known as "Sherman's bummers". Torn up railroad rails were heated and bent around telegraph poles as "Sherman bowties". Cities were fired either by his troops or by defeated Confederates pursuing a scorched earth policy retreating before an advancing army. Sherman is attributed with the first modern "total war" against civilian populations. His most prominent act of citizenship without controversy was his absolute refusal to accept the Republican nomination for President. He was so passionately hated throughout the South that any administration he might inaugurate could have brought widespread rebellion. He famously said in 1884, "If nominated, I will not accept. If elected, I will not serve."
He hated his wife.

William duke of Normandy is the most hated king in English history
Gen. William T. Sherman was largely hated among white southerners, due to his aggressive campaign of the March to the Sea. During this campaign, Sherman ordered all houses, farms, towns, and other civilian occupancies burned to the ground. In the wake of this, many people (even women and children) where left starving and homeless. Many of Sherman's troops where known to rape the women they came across, and loot the stores.
