While amateur can be used derisively to indicate that a person does not do a task well, it does not really have that meaning (except to people who see no value in anything unless it makes money.)
Amateur comes from the French for "lover." It means that you do something for the love of it, not because you get paid for it (in which case it is your profession and you are a professional. Consider that a parent is an amateur at raising children (even though they may be very good at it). A professional doing the same job can be called warden or babysitter and do as good a job, technically, but few poems of praise are written about them.
