Chief Ouray 1833-1880, for whom the fantastically picturesque town of Ouray, Colorado is named, might be the most often quoted historical Ute.

While he engaged in his share of violence as a youth, he spent most of his time in leadership as a reconciliator. This was not popular position among all the bands of Utes (Ouray was of the Uncompahgre band, and even they were not unaniously in agreement with his peace-making attitude.

He testified before Congress in 1880 in the wake of the Ute uprising of 1879, but his band got relocated out of their ancestral lands in Colorado to present-day Utah anyway.
