William Henry Harrison died a month into his presidency, and so the vice president at the time, John Tyler, was sworn into office. This was the first time this had happened in US history, so he set the precedent. This is what we call John Tyler's precedent--having the vice president become the president in the event of the current president's death.
Many years later in the 1960's, this precedent became doubtlessly constitutional with the ratification of the 25th amendment which basically sets the standards for succession to the Presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to Presidential disabilities.

The precedent set in 1200 for more representative government is known as the "Magna Carta." Signed by King John of England, it established the principle that the monarchy's powers were limited by law and that certain rights were granted to the barons and, by extension, to the broader population. This foundational document laid the groundwork for the development of parliamentary systems and the idea of individual rights, influencing future democratic governance.
John Peter Zenger was a German-American printer and journalist in the 18th century. He is best known for publishing the New-York Weekly Journal, where he criticized the colonial governor of New York, William Cosby. Zenger's arrest and subsequent trial in 1735 became a landmark case for freedom of the press, as his defense argued that publishing truthful statements about government officials should not be considered libel. His acquittal helped establish the precedent for the principle of press freedom in America.
When John Peter Zenger published an article in 1734 criticizing Governor William Cosby of New York, he was arrested for seditious libel. His trial in 1735 became a landmark case for freedom of the press, as his lawyer, Andrew Hamilton, argued that truth should be a defense against libel charges. Zenger was acquitted, setting a precedent that would influence the development of First Amendment rights in the United States. This case highlighted the importance of a free press in holding government officials accountable.
