More people were killed in air raid because they were used more as the atomic was hard to make and cost more money so using more normal bombs more often would have been cheaper even thought the atomic bombs were a) more powerful, and, b) even thought they killed more people the air raids were more particle.

How did the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki illustrate the idea that World War 2 was a total war?

Most of the people killed by the atomic bombs were civilians, not members of the military. More Japanese were killed by conventional bombings, but the new threat of atomic devastation pushed Emperor Hirohito to admit that Japan was beaten.
