The First Amendment, in essence, created many new freedoms for the American people. The Americans fought the revolutionary war mainly because there was a strong central power, the king of England, who ignored the people's voice in the law-making area, Parliament. After the Constitution was created, many Americans were worried that a similarly strong central government power would abuse people's rights. To be safe, they created the Bill of Rights, which includes the 1st Amendment.

It allowed people to:

Petition freely

Speak freely

Write freely

Believe in any religion freely
