Primary mission of the Patriot missile during DS? KEEPING Israel OUT OF THE CONFLICT! Explanation: 1. President Bush Senior knew that Iraq would be no competition, and easily defeated. 2. Saddam Hussain knew that too! 3. Saddam had only one chance against the US, and the US knew what that "one" chance was too! 4. If (a big "IF") Saddam cold turn the US/Iraq War into a HOLY WAR, that would save Iraq (and save Saddam too). 5. The only way to turn Operation Desert Storm into a HOLY WAR was to involve Israel. The US knew this too. 6. At all costs the US was to restrain Israel from entering the conflict. If Israel entered the fight against Iraq...it quickly would become a real war (verses a quick and dirty military campaign). 7. All parties knew these facts. Saddam fired SCUD missiles into Israel to start a fight...up until 1991, Israel always had had a reputation for counter-attacking ANYBODY that attacked them. Translation: Pick on Israel...and you had a fight on your hands! 8. Consequently, the Bush Sr. administration begged, borrowed, and pleaded (and ultimately bought Israel's word against joining the battle) by virture of giving them the Patriot Missiles to destroy Saddam's SCUDs. 9. It worked! Israel never joined the fight. Saddam never got his HOLY WAR. And Desert Storm concluded on or about 26 February 1991, less than two months after it started. Mission Complete. Note: The Patriot was simply an air defence weapon system; originally designed to knock down planes, but after the cold war ended (and no planes remained to knock down), the Patriot remained an anti-missile defense system...sense missiles are likely to remain a more common threat than any future jet fighter bomber.
