The reconstruction of Japan was an effort financed primarily by the United States to help Japan emerge from a military dominated society toward democracy and free trade. The manifest purposes were to prevent starvation and suffering, reduce the destruction caused by atomic bombs, improve facilities and basic services, and restart peaceful industries. The latent purposes were to prevent Japan from becoming a socialist or communist country, open Japan to American exports, to provide military bases in order to limit Soviet expansionism and to study the effects of radiation on humans.
