Stalin, the Soviet leader, signed a non aggression pact with Germany in August 1939. It was a crowning diplomatic achievement for the Nazi regime as it allowed Hitler to concentrate all his forces against Poland and the western powers, with only a minor concern over Russia. Within days Germany attacked Poland, quickly followed by the Russians. The pact contained clauses that partitioned Poland between the two and also divided other various eastern European nations between the two powers. These clauses were near identical to the later decisions that divided Germany and other European nations between the Soviets and the western Allies in 1945, the only major difference being that the British and French did not declare war on Russia for doing what Germany had done six years prior.
