In October 1962, U.S. reconnaissance photographs revealed the presence of Soviet missile sites in Cuba, indicating the installation of medium-range ballistic missiles capable of striking the United States. These images confirmed suspicions about Soviet military activity on the island and heightened tensions during the Cold War, leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The discovery prompted urgent negotiations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to avoid potential conflict.

Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev met in Paris in 1960 primarily to discuss tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The meeting took place during the Paris Summit, which aimed to address issues such as disarmament, the status of Berlin, and overall U.S.-Soviet relations. However, the summit was marred by the U-2 incident, where an American spy plane was shot down over Soviet territory, leading to a breakdown in negotiations and heightened tensions. The meeting ultimately highlighted the deep-seated mistrust between the two superpowers.
The Cuban Missile Crisis helped to escalate and de-escalate tensions with the Soviet Union. It escalated the tensions because the Soviet Union repeatedly told the US that they would not place missiles in Cuba and that there was no reason for concern and then they went ahead and did it anyway. This caused tensions to escalate because the US and other countries could no longer trust the Soviet Union. Tensions de-escalated because the US was able to gain the support of so many other countries. This showed the Soviet Union that they had no support and that their testing the US and placing missiles in different places would not be tolerated at all. So, they removed their missiles from Cuba and the tensions partially de-escalated.
