This stretcher bearer was John Simpson Kilpatrick, of the Third Ambulane Corps at Gallipoli who with his donkey "Duffy" made countless trips to recover wounded ANZAC's. He was killed in action.
The famous quote 'lions lead by donkeys' regarding the battle of the Somme refers to the bravery of the soldiers fighting and ultimately dying for their country and to the cowardice of those leading them eg. General Haig and the Politicians.

John Simpson Kirkpatrick, often referred to simply as John Simpson, became one of the most famous soldiers at Gallipoli due to his bravery and selflessness in rescuing wounded soldiers during the campaign. He famously used a donkey to transport the injured from the battlefield to safety, working tirelessly under enemy fire. His actions not only saved many lives but also captured the imagination of the public, symbolizing the spirit of ANZAC courage and camaraderie. The donkey. John Simpson Kirkpatrick and his donkey are remembered as ANZAC legends, and heroes. Simpson took one (and later more) of the donkeys that had been landed with the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli and, instead of just using them as water-carriers, used the donkeys to carry wounded men through the treacherous Shrapnel Gully at Gallipoli to where they would be treated and evacuated from the beaches. Simpson himself was killed just three weeks after he took on the work of cheerfully carrying wounded soldiers back through the gunfire. The donkey continued on with another wounded man on his back, carrying him to safety.
Donkeys were purchsed from at least one of the Greek Islands on the way to Gallipoli. The troops landed at Lemnos Island and purchased donkeys to be used as water carriers for the troops. Those that survived being pushed overboard to reach the shore (donkeys cannot swim) were forgotten until ANZAC legend Simpson started using one to help carry wounded from the front lines down to the medical tents. Simpson and the donkey would acrry water up to the men fighting, and carry the injured soldiers back, because there were not enough stretcher-bearers for the task. Although Simpson is the most famous soldier known to use donkeys to carry the wounded, when he was killed, others took over the donkey and the task. Even when the ANZACs were evacuated, Simpson's donkey was not left behind, but also evacuated off th island. It is unknown what happened to him then - there were reports he was stolen when the troops docked back at Lemnos, but chances are that the donkey smelt home, cast off his shackles and escaped of his own accord.

John Simpson aka John Simpson Kirkpatrick was a stretcher-bearer with the original ANZAC troops who landed at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. On the morning of 19 May 1915, following a night of vicious fighting after the arrival of Turkish reinforcements, he was killed by Turkish machine gun fire near Steele's Post as he was returning down Monash Valley with two wounded men. One man was shot with Simpson, but the man on the donkey's back remained. The donkey continued on the well-worn track, obediently carrying the wounded man to where he would be tended. For this reason, Simpson is remembered as a hero.
